Exchange or transformation? Two different things

Exchange or becoming-other?

change — from Latin cambiare (to exchange, to barter): substitution. Replace one thing with another.

German Veränderung = ver- + ändern (to make other) + -ung: the process of becoming other — transformation from within. The thing that changes is still present; it has become other.

English transform (Latin trans-form: across form) is closer to Veränderung. But "change" — the primary word — carries the exchange/substitution meaning.

Two genuinely different processes:

  • Substitution (swap this for that — change)
  • Transformation (this becomes other — Veränderung)

Substitution mistaken for transformation

When "change" primarily means substitution, transformation is systematically misread:

  • Political change: new leaders (substitution) vs. changed structures (transformation)
  • Personal change: new behaviour (substitution) vs. shifted perception (transformation)
  • Organisational change: new strategy (substitution) vs. changed culture (transformation)

The substitution model is faster, easier to announce, and more visible. The transformation model is slower, harder to measure, and often invisible.

The compression toward substitution creates a persistent gap: change is announced; transformation is not achieved.

The question is not: what are you exchanging? The question is: what is becoming other in you?

Transformation is not substitution. It does not replace what was there. It allows what was there to become different — to remain itself while becoming other.

That process is slower and cannot be announced. It can only be recognised — after it has happened.
