Neither originally meant "morally praiseworthy" as a primary meaning. Both meant: this belongs here. This is appropriate to this situation.

A good knife = a knife that fits its function. A good moment = a moment that fits the situation. A good person = a person who fits into the whole — who belongs, who is appropriate to life.

The compression: good = what the community morally approves of.

⚠ From fitting to approved

The moral-approval compression removed the primary question from gōdaz: not "is this morally correct?" but "does this fit? Is this appropriate? Does this belong?"

Consequences:

  • "Good behaviour" means approved behaviour, not fitting behaviour
  • "Be good" means comply with norms, not be appropriate to the situation
  • "A good person" means someone the community approves of, not someone who fits well into the whole

"Good" has become a compliance word. Its original force — the fitness and belonging of a thing — has been nearly entirely replaced by the moral-endorsement function.

"Good job!" — praise for approved output. "A good life" — a life that meets approved standards. The question of fitting and belonging is largely gone.

When fitting is replaced by approval

When good means approved, the authority who defines approval also defines what is good.

"That is not good" = the community does not approve — which requires asking: which community? And whose interests does their approval serve?

The original gōdaz asked a different, harder question: does this fit? Is this appropriate to the whole situation? Does this belong?

Those questions are answerable from the inside — without reference to whoever holds the approval authority.

The fitting-question is more demanding than the approval-question. It requires you to engage with reality rather than with the community's judgment of reality.

The restored question is: does this fit?

Fit to the situation. Fit to the relationships involved. Fit to what life requires here.

A good act is one that is appropriate — that belongs — that contributes to the whole rather than disrupting it, extracting from it, or requiring others to pay for it.

This cannot be determined by consulting the approval authority. It requires honest contact with the actual situation.

English good and German gut share Proto-Germanic gōdaz — fitting, appropriate. The same root. The same compression. The same lost question.

Chinese 好 (hǎo) — good, fine, well: The traditional character shows 女 (, woman/mother) + 子 (, child): Good is the state of mother and child together — the condition of care, belonging, and appropriate relation. Good is relational. Good is the right fitting of lives together.

Chinese 善 (shàn) — good, virtuous, skilled, kind: Contains 羊 (yáng, sheep — traditionally associated with sacrifice and offering) + a speaking/gathering element. The quality of offering oneself appropriately — good as the giving that fits.

What the comparison shows: Chinese 好 is the most direct restoration of the original gōdaz sense: good is the right relation of things — mother and child together, the fitting of lives. Neither English nor German preserves this relational, fitting quality as clearly.
