Completing — or measuring output?

performance — Old French par-fournir: to complete, to furnish fully, to bring to completion. achievement — Old French achever: to bring to a head, to complete.

Both originally described completion — bringing something to its full form. Not measurable output. Not ranked productivity. The fullness of what was done.

German Leistung — from leisten (from Proto-Germanic laistjan = to follow a track, to stand firm): to fulfill, to accomplish, to stand for what you do. The "standing firm" dimension: leisten implies responsibility for the outcome.

Compressed to: productive output, quantifiable result, rankable metric.

When measurement replaces completion

"Performance" as measurable output detaches from the question of completion:

  • A performance that hits its metrics but leaves the work incomplete is a good performance.
  • Work that completes what was needed but falls outside the measurement is invisible.

"Achievement" compressed to credentials and listed accomplishments loses the original question: was the thing brought to its head? Was it completed?

The performance society measures what it can measure and calls that achievement. What cannot be measured — depth, integrity, care — does not appear in the metric.

The original question: was it completed? Did it reach its full form?

Not: did it reach the target number?

Completion is a different question from measurement. It asks: is this whole? Is this what was needed? Does it stand on its own?

That question can only be answered from the inside — by the person doing the work — not from the outside by whoever set the metric.
